CHAPTER 1 OF FREEDOM 25

The only way to combat the spirit of fear is to believe and insist on the Word of God with your mouth and actions.

'For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and sound mind.'
2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV

Research has it that the phrase, “Do not be afraid” is written 365 times in the Bible and I think it’s really profound as we mostly have 365 days in a year, it’s more like for every day of the year, God has this Word to and for us. In this terrifying fallen world, God’s constant Word and Will for us is, ‘DO NOT BE AFRAID…’ but this statement alone isn’t complete, and our God is not one to leave things in half, so as you journey through scripture you would find the completion of this word both said and implied.

And what is it?

Do not be afraid- for I AM with you. The Lion of the tribe of Judah. The Emperor of the Universe. The Creator of the seen and unseen says He is with you. It is not ‘Do not be afraid because bad things won’t happen’ but, ‘Do not be afraid because no matter what comes your way- I AM AND I WILL- BE WITH YOU.’

In my life, I have learned that loneliness empowers fear, the thought that bad things would happen, and we would be alone, deserted, hopeless, ashamed and in pain gives fear huge power. But God says, “No, I am with you- always, wherever you go, so do not be afraid.”

In my study of fear, I have learned that God doesn’t want us to be afraid not because what we fear will happen but more because fear cripples us in a lie and we can live this sad cage for years. It comes like a dark wind blurring our atmosphere, keeping us in panic, stealing our joy and limiting us from achieving our divine assignments.

However, I am not here to explain fear, it is A LOT and varies for different people and different situations. But I want to help you be truly free:

1. Get a Word and specific instructions

Pretense doesn’t solve anything, neither does denial. As Christians, we are called to wage a good warfare of faith. Fear seeks to cripple our faith so we cannot ignore it, especially when we know the devil- our adversary is involved.

Where are you experiencing fear?

  • Your future?
  • Health?
  • Family?
  • Losing a loved one?
  • School?
  • Career?
  • Children/parenting?
  • Death?
  • Trauma /Tragedy?
  • Etc.- you know.

Sit with the Word of God and sweet Holy Spirit, ask for a word and instructions. As a child of God, you should have words and promises from God for every area of your life- every area. Don’t wait for the enemy to attack because he will surely try. You must have your sword ready for attack, you must have your armor so that his arrows bounce back to him.

What has God said about you, your divine calling on earth, your marriage, family, finances, children, health etc. you must wait with the Lord in study and prayer to receive a word. I understand the idea of picking scriptures that align with situations, which is good but please get a specific word too, wait with Him, get a word tailored for you. The Bible is for everyone but contained in it are specific promises for each of us. When you receive one of those, you know, it’s this moment when you feel like, this was written for me.

Our heavenly Father is that personal, He wrote His Word for us and you- it is general yet specific.

I used to cry, shiver and wail from fear, mine was mostly chronic, I would get restless, insomnia, bad dreams and real crippled mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I desperately wished I could open my chest and pull out the fear, it was so thick and hard, sitting within me, darkening my atmosphere. I got tired and worn out from fighting, I felt scriptures were not working as well.

Daddy taught me that if I wanted fear out, I needed to fill that space and I needed to fill it with the fear of Him- the fear of the LORD and a trembling at His WORD (ISAIAH 66:2), so I did a study on it and started to practice it.

He also instructed me to stop fighting it and instead spend time with Him when fear comes at me, so when it did, I sat with Him, and we spent time together. Overtime, I received light and developed spiritual stamina to not listen or believe anything that doesn’t align to God’s Word over my life. 

These are personal instructions I got in my secret place; you would receive yours when you seek Him.

2. With the Word, wage a good warfare

Before we move on, I did like to note this; when we think of warfare, there is a tendency to feel it’s you against the enemy, but you need to know that it’s not just you. Jesus is with you, He has already fought and won, the devil is already defeated. The best way to win the war is to do it in communion and complete obedience to Jesus.

Remain in fellowship, don’t let fear steal your worship and time with Him, sometimes He doesn’t even want you to fight, and you wouldn’t know this details without intimate fellowship.

So, delight in the Lord and love on Him.

Now to waging a good warfare with the Word- you do so in confession, in prayer, in actions and in tears where necessary. The Word of God will not fail you. Fight with it, insist on it. Go on your knees and declare the truth, get up and choose to live the truth. Though it tarries, wait for it. Keep at it. Your mouth should be full of His Word. 

Believe the Word of God, the declarations and promises of God in there can be your reality if you insist.

3. Persist in prayer and submit logic to the Word

I was a captive of fear for 4 years and up till now, I still have my moments like everyone else. From experience, I can tell you that the spirit/spirits of fear make good use of logic. It tells you how your fear is logically realistic, it shows you situations and experiences to prove that it is true. Fear wants you to believe it, so it creates false evidence and amplifies everything to cripple you.

Submit to the Word. In this submission is freedom but you can’t submit to something you don’t fully trust- this is where meditation and prayer comes in, you persist in meditation, prayer and confession till the Word becomes more real than fear and then you can easily submit.

You also need to practice His Presence, spend time with sweet Holy Spirit and get to know Him, you can trust God when you learn and understand Him, so spend so much time in His Presence talking with Him, listening to Him, sharing your heart, reading His Word, asking Him to teach you, journaling, worshipping, praying and adoring Him. 

The Presence of God is so precious, the more time you spend there, the more immune you are to the lies and arrows of the enemy.

4. Having done all to stand, now stand

Last month, the devil attempted to deceive me again, trying to instill fear in my heart about something he had previously used to hold me back for years. I responded, “This is a lie, it can’t happen. I know what God has said, I am not standing on anything light, I am standing on the Word.”

Through my journey, I have learned by suffering to hold to highest esteem, believe in pain and sorrow, trust in the face of doubt and insist in the midst of weakness the Words of the Lord. I don’t give up on the Word, I face God in the midst of my trials/mistakes and cry “God, You said… You said this. You told me…” And You said has never failed so I know it’s impossible for Him to fail.

The Word of God cannot fail you. 
Insist.

5. Fear might not go away immediately or even soon

Sometimes fear stays through all the warfare. This is when you must consciously face it with action, no matter how many times you fall and fear whispers, “I told you…” Get up and keep going.

Do not let fear dictate your actions.

6. Rinse and Repeat

Emphatically, rinse and repeat. Some battles are easily won, some are not. There is something Lisa Bevere always says, I am paraphrasing now- When the enemy attacks, she recognizes that his tactics only serve as a testament to her strength in Christ. Rather than being intimidated, she stands firm in her faith, embracing the authority and power that comes from her relationship with God. A point comes when you realize it is done and your job is to insist on the victory.

Raise up the Blood.

In all of these, remember that when you grow weary, your Daddy is present to hold you up. You don’t have to do it yourself and He doesn’t want you doing it yourself either.

Lean into His Presence, rely on His Holy Spirit, use the Blood of Jesus at all times and see, as someone who has received victory over fear, after 4 years of chronic struggle- it will be okay. Soon. You would be fine as long as you turn to Jesus and trust in His Word.
