Freedom from Trauma

CHAPTER 2 OF FREEDOM 25

‘He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed.

~ 1 Peter 2:24

Trauma is not light, and nothing turns me off than people who treat it light and disregard someone’s pain and feelings, taking on the perspective that the person is immature or doing too much. Going through several traumatic experiences has taught me that if not treated properly, it would bear fruit that as time goes by, it becomes more difficult to identify the root of those fruits.

But like I said the last time, Freedom 25 is not about explaining and highlighting the issues, it’s about getting you free. You know your pain, you know your hurts, you know the things that you are probably pretending about or masking.

If no one else knows, you know. You know those feelings that come and go and repeat…

1. Brutal Honesty

The first step to addressing trauma is what I like to call brutal honesty. Until you get brutally honest with Jesus about all you feel, all you think and so on, you might never find freedom. I love Jesus so much. He is the One who understands very intricately the pain and hurt you feel, I have had several encounters with Him in this area and I can tell you that the best person to trust and draw from is Jesus. In fact, there are certain levels of trauma that people and time can’t heal, only Jesus.

You might be angry and disgusted at Him for letting it happen, that’s fine; what He desires is that you draw near.

Jesus is willing to bear the blame and the shame, He did it on the Cross and He is still doing it now, He is willing to bear all your outpour of anger and disappointment, in fact, He prefers you pour them all on Him instead of anyone. For example, if someone hurts you, rather than letting your anger out at him or her, Jesus prefers you let your anger at Him; as always, He is the one who bore the blame and shame for the sin of humanity- past, present and future.

And here’s where I will get personal; Jesus is not only your Lord, He is also your Lover, the Bible identifies all who believe in Him as His bride. He is your groom and as every good husband would care for His bride, that is a minute picture in comparison to how much Jesus cares for you. The more vulnerable you get with Jesus, the more open your heart will be to Him.

You have to understand that He is not the enemy- the devil is. Even people are just vessels, the real enemy is the serpent. So, you must fight your war rightly. The moment you begin to see God as the cause of pain or evil, that’s where you miss it.

Draw near to Jesus knowing that both of you are in this together, you are never alone, He is with you.

2. The Anointing of the Holy Spirit

When you draw to Jesus, there is a high probability that He will gently hand you over to His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is like a mum who serves as nurturer and our ultimate Emmanuel. Jesus would show you His Spirit and lead you to invite Him, when you invite sweet Holy Spirit, He would cling to you and begin a tough work of healing and purification.

I want you to read the scripture below carefully, these were the words of Jesus before His Cross. His disciples were grieving about his coming suffering alongside His final departure from earth and what you see below are part of the responses He gave them.

But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate (Holy Spirit) won’t come.
If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me.
Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more.
Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.
There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.
He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. '
~ John 16:7-13 NLT

In the above scripture, Jesus is emphatic on the place of His Spirit. He also lets us know that even Him cannot fill that space and based on the importance of that space, He needs to leave quickly so that the Spirit can come. I find it genuinely intriguing when He tells us sweet Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth, emphasis on guide.

Jesus told His disciples that the much He wanted to share with them, they couldn’t bear at the time but when sweet Holy Spirit comes, He will guide them into all truth. You need to know, the Spirit of God right from the beginning has been the One who hovers and gets His way around darkness, He knows how to navigate your complexities, intricacies, feelings, events, past, present, future etc. and deliver in digestible forms what you need each moment.

He guides you into all truth.

Trauma can be so huge. Many times, I looked at my life and the trauma were just too much, too complex, too deep and too painful; you cannot guide yourself through such a well of emotions, mental and sometimes physical plus spiritual damage, only the Spirit can. So, as you invite Him into each moment and spend time in the Bible, prayer and conversation- communing with Him, He delivers your daily bread and if you surrender in obedience to every instruction promptly no matter what’s at stake, He gets the work done quicker than you can imagine.

The work gets done in time measurement to your obedience.

3. Our heavenly Father is on the Move

‘When we were at Mount Sinai, the Lord our God said to us, ‘You have stayed at this mountain long enough. It is time to break camp and move on…’

~ Deuteronomy 1:6-7 NLT

One thing is evident in the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation- from the beginning of time until now: God has been and is moving.

The moves of God have taken different forms through time, but there is no point where God was idle or stagnant. He prepares hundreds of years before, plans out everything before its manifestation, He doesn’t procrastinate, He doesn’t delay, He keeps it moving.

‘Move on’ is a statement quite familiar with our generation yet is one God has always lived. Adam fell and broke God’s heart, He moved on. King Saul made God regret appointing Him, He moved on. Moses disobeyed God warranting his death and God moved on. Stephen was martyred, He moved on with more force!

But when we say this alone, it’s not true, God doesn’t just move on, He addresses issues, He processes it and raises the banner of His Nature and Word- that’s how He knows how to move on and what to move on to.

When Adam fell, He gave them new clothing and took them out of the garden, protecting them from making things worse. When Cain killed Abel, He corrected him and gave Eve Seth. When Moses died, He allowed Israel a mourning time and carried on his (Moses) legacy through his assistant, Joshua. When King Saul disappointed him, He gave ample time for repentance while preparing David to do it right and when Stephen was killed, He received him to Himself in eternity then utilized that energy to spread His truth even more.

So, you see, moving on isn’t about turning a blind eye. We know not everything is worth our attention, but trauma definitely is, God moves on quickly because He confronts issues and submits to His Word instantly while we linger in overthinking, fear, insecurity, lack of trust, shame and ultimately disobedience to the very Word God Himself submits to.

This is the difference and the reason for my last statement in number 2, the quicker you obey, the quicker the work gets done.

4. Let Patience do its full work

‘My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. ‘

~ James 1:2-4 NKJV

Sometimes, God’s quickness can be slow to us, Their (Father, Son and Spirit) timing isn’t ours and at different points, the work can seem slow and even stagnant to the human eyes. God isn’t just interested in healing you, but also in purifying and making something beautiful out of those broken pieces … this takes time.

The clock might be ticking too fast to you with months passing by, and everyone else seems to be getting better. I used to compare myself, I used to dislike my life, I used to wonder when it would be over and why everyone seemed to have it easier than I do but here’s the thing- if you are walking in obedience with the Holy Spirit, you are right on time.

God can achieve in a day what can’t be built in 7 years, so wait, follow and let patience do its work. The Bible encourages us to not be weary in well doing for at the right time, we would reap the fruit if we do not give up.

This is the hardest part of trauma, no one wants to live in pain and hurtful memories, but God equips us to walk through the valley of the shadow of death, He prepares a table before us, He gives us the constant ever abiding presence of His loving Ruach- Holy Spirit. We are not alone in it.

And if we keep holding out, we will arrive at His definite promise, “He gave me beauty for ashes.”

‘To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair.
In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for his own glory. ‘
