Freedom to know God for Yourself

CHPTER 6 OF FREEDOM 25

“And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth…”

~ ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭17‬:‭11‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The average Christian’s knowledge of God and perspective of Him is a combination of various teachings by men, experiences and testimonies. However, true Christianity starts when we get up, willing to lay aside stuff, challenge what we have been taught and search the scriptures for ourselves.

To give a good balance, you cannot know God without being taught, human vessels have a pivotal role, but you have a responsibility to be open yet discerning, to go back to the secret place, test everything and hold on to only what is true. Honestly, I have gained more from a sermon when I took it back to God and let Him teach me.

However, God doesn’t override our will, many times when we come to God, we feel the man or woman of God is fully right and we just want confirmations or more understanding, so even when they are wrong or the teaching isn’t applicable to you, the Holy Spirit would have a difficult time ministering that to your heart because you are already seated in your bias.

People are constantly feeding us about everything and about Christ, so much that when we go before Him, we see Him from the lens of what friend A, Pastor B, Mentor C, Model D etc. said about Him and look they might be right. But… they also might not be. You need to search the scriptures and know God for yourself.

I was in a meeting last year and my God- Mum said, “Be willing to challenge all that you have believed so far. Go back and sit with the Father, ask Him questions. God is not afraid of your questions; you are the one afraid to ask.” That hit me so much because we want our convictions to be personal and rooted in the Bible, not an affiliation.

Below are 3 tips that would help.

1. Set aside ample time every day for Holy Communion

Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So, anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven

~ ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18‬:‭2‬-‭4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I use the word ‘holy’ intentionally because it simply means set apart, unto ONE. Holy communion meaning: this time you have with God daily should be focused on Him and Him alone, do not bring anyone’s teaching, opinions etc. into this time, except He brings it up, refers to it or highlights it, do not. Push aside everything else and just learn from Him.

This is a really pivotal step because even though I always sought God and spent time with Him for years, I didn’t really know Him for the first 5 because it was filled with the interruptions of man’s teachings. When I finally changed my environment to a new place where I was taught differently, I started to seek God with a pure lens and find Him for who He is.

I am still finding Him, every day we should pray that God helps us see Him for who He is without any veil.

This time you have is your Daddy and child time. You come as a child in love, humility, curiosity and teachability. I had an encounter with Him yesterday that changed my life, and it was rooted here. I was postured as His child, listening, going through the scriptures, taking notes, asking questions, not pretending that I get it when I don’t, not trying to rush the process. I wanted to really understand, see how I could apply it and get results.

You want your Christianity to bear fruit, so you can’t pretend to get it when you don’t, seek to understand.  In Matthew 13 where Jesus shared the parable of the Sower, He described the fertile soil as those who hear, understand and produce.

You cannot produce when you don’t really understand. The principles and practices of our faith are simple and apply to daily living, if you put in the work, you would bear the fruits. So, seek to understand, ask questions over and over. Over and over, in my time with God and even randomly, I lift my second finger like a little child and guess what I say? “Ruach (Holy Spirit), can I ask a question?”

And He mostly responds, “Go on.” except He is teaching me something else and He doesn’t want me interrupting, and after He is done teaching me, He would say, “What did you want to ask? Or, you wanted to ask something, go on.” So, sit with Him. It’s the best thing I learned this year from a darling God Mum, “Sit with Him. He will show you”

There is so much power in sitting with Him, seeking Him like a child and practicing what He teaches you even if it doesn't make sense.

2. God is able to Lead you!

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.”

~ ‭‭John‬ ‭16‬:‭13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I want to scream this in your face, God can lead you!

Many mistakes I made and wrong paths I took were because of my fear of failure, I feared that I would fail, go astray, miss it and so I kept going with people’s opinions instead of what I knew God was saying and sometimes I didn’t even seek what He was saying because I was already afraid that if I don’t do it as this person said, I would fail or get it wrong.

We underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit to lead Daddy’s children rightly by His Word, so we poknose in their lives, trying to control and fit them into what we think they should be. Now, I am not saying you don’t need people or that people aren’t important or that when you sense someone going a wrong path, you shouldn’t interfere.

I am saying, let’s come to an agreement that we do not need to be afraid because God can lead you and lead them. I have been preaching publicly since 2021 and I don’t think there is any message where I didn’t mention and emphasize the importance of spending time with God because I know that if people really spend time with God, they would get it right, He will lead them and they will follow.

I have been in the Christian faith long enough and seen that many don’t spend time with God on a daily basis. Many Christians depend on church, prayer watch, meetings etc. and online sermons, they don’t take out time to be with God alone and some don’t even do the above and still don’t spend time with God. Both categories would not bear true spiritual fruit, they would be full of flesh and not progress in faith and their authority in Christ as they should, and I mentioned this in detail in Chapter 4 titled: ‘Freedom from idolatry.’

Many issues and struggles we face are simply because we are not abiding in His Presence.
Start abiding.

3. Stick it out in hard times

“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.”

~ ‭‭Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

There is a profound way we get to know God in hard times. Don’t be the person constantly seeking an easy way out when you encounter challenges, a point comes in your life where you have to stick it out with God. You tell yourself to stay until the end. People can’t do somethings for you and a time came in my life where I realized, these guys don’t get it and I can’t keep explaining stuff so let me stick it out with God.

Through the challenges; you keep seeking, you keep asking, you pour your sorrow on Him, you wait, you obey, you do what you can, you listen, you question, you believe, you hope and see, God will come through for you in His way, when He does, you will know beyond a doubt that Jesus showed up. A way to know God for yourself is to put all your hope in Him during hard times, stop seeking human sympathy, go to the Lord, stay with Him as long as it requires, cry in His Presence, you are sure of help there, you are sure of mercy and grace.

Don’t let your circumstance make you pitiful or make you a beggar, that’s not who you are and if you practice seeking Him in tough times, you would grow immensely, you will come out with a higher level of wielded power and authority. Somehow, going through pain with God teaches you that He is all you need, He can take care of you, He loves you, He holds you, and this truth helps you live your life with your head held up, your foot stamped on the ground and ready to move at His command.
